Welcome to 'WANDERLUST -Stories & Images-'.

(MAKO.pen&paper)

Story of Rhubarb./

Oct.2012

RHUBARB SOUR CREAM PIE*
-hilbarn Recipe, October-

FROM THE HILBARN BOX:

1 whole bunch rhubarb, roughly chopped
4 large golden delicious apples, peeled, cored & sliced

ADD:
3/4 cup raw sugar
1/2 packet Marie (or Milk Arrowroot) biscuits, crushed
1 cup coconut
1 cup plain flour
1/2 cup caster sugar
175g butter, melted
1 1/2 cups sour cream
milk
cinnamon

1 Put apples, rhubarb and raw sugar in a large pot and place over medium heat, covering with a lid. Stir from time to time, and when fruit is mostly broke down, remove lid and turn heat down to low. Simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour until mixture is smooth and thick.
2 Butter and flour a 28cm tart tin. Preheat oven to 180 C.  Put crushed biscuits, coconut, flour, caster sugar and butter in a bowl and combine well. Scoop out roughly half the mixture into the tin, spread it over the base and press it flat. Move around the sides of the tin pressing handfuls of the mixture to the edges. Cut around the top of the tin with a knife so the edge is no longer ragged and press a finger into the top of each scoop to smooth the surface.
3 Put the base in the oven and cook for about 20 mins or until the sides are lightly browned. Spoon in the still-warm rhubarb,  leaving 0.5 - 1 cm of the pie shell showing at the top. Smooth the surface.
4 Put the sour cream in a bowl with a few drops of milk and stir until smooth. Pour it over the rhubarb and spread to edges. Sprinkle with cinnamon and place in oven for 10 - 15 minutes, until the sour cream sets and has a glazed appearance.
5 Leave to cool to room temp before removing the rim of the tin and serving.

* Hil found this recipe in The Hungry Girls' Cookbook and  has cooked it a million times.

I wanted to cook and taste Rhubarb yesterday, because I thought it would help drawing the illustration recipe of "Rhubarb Sour Cream Pie" for hilbarn. I had never cooked Rhubarb and I wasn't sure what it taste like. It was already 6:30pm when I went out shopping. Surprisingly, it's still blight outside and little flowers were blooming everywhere, so walking outside was not so bad.
I went down to the supermarket in the city, but I couldn't find any Rhubarb. Why isn't Rhubarb here? I was so disappointed, as I walked down all the way from home to the supermarket on Friday evening!
I decided to not give up. I went to another supermarket to find Rhubarb  Unfortunately, the supermarket didn't have Rhubarb either! I was so disappointed. What can I do?

I didn't want to give up making Rhubarb pie that night. I was thinking "what could I use instead of Rhubarb? Celery as it has similar shape? Beatroot as it has a nice red colour?" When I was wondering around the vegetable section of the supermarket, one lady called my name "Hey Mako!!". She was the one who liked my exhibition at milkbar. We chatted while and then, I asked her "Do you think beetroot can replace Rhubarb in a sour cream pie?" She said "No way! It's sooo different. I have a rhubarb at my house. My partner likes taking care of our vege garden and cooking. Come to my house. I will give you fresh Rhubarb " "Really!? That's sounds really great. How kind you are!" I said. She gave me a lift to her house. Her partner and children were there and were friendly. We went to their garden and
I got fresh Rhubarb!
すると「No way!

So I cooked the pie following the recipe. It was really tasty.  My housemates and friends said they like the Rhubarb Sour Cream Pie. After we enjoyed tasting, then I made the illustration recipe on top of this journal.
Thanks to the lady who took me to their vege garden and gave fresh rhubarb. That's why I like Tasmania.

Hilban is 'Sharing love of fresh Tasmanian Produce.'
Hil and Barn lives in north east Tasmania.
They  buy directly from growers and farmers and deliver it to your town directly.
"We source produce from smaller growers who are passionate about what they do, as well as from larger farmers who appreciate our efforts to maintain the freshness of what they produce - picking up produce from them, then packing and delivering fresh to you within as short a timeframe as possible. "

She doesn't know what kind of vegetable she would have. As soon as she receive vegetable and fruit, Hilary cook one dish out of the ingredients which she pack into the box to deliver. My role is to turn the yummy recipe into hand writing and drawing card. Hilbarn packed everything on Sunday and we can receive it on Monday in Launceston. So this is real food's real recipe which is created absolutely freshly every week.

This is the Hilbarn box filled with fresh vegetable, fruits and the fresh recipe!
I'm very excited to open the box,  like opening birthday present.

I actually cooked this week's recipe 'Roasted Cauliflower & Herb Salad' yesterday.

'Put cauliflower florets on oven tray lined with baking paper. Drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with sea salt and pepper. Bake for about 15 mins. until browned. Take out and turn cauli over to brown other side. Remove and set aside. '

'To make the dressing: put 2 tablespoons capers, roughly chopped, 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard, 2 cloves garlic, crushed and 2 tablespoons cider vinegar in a jam jar. Set aside for 15 mins. Add oil, shake up, then add salt and pepper. '

Other ingredients are
10 cherry tomatoes, halved
handful of torn lettuce
1 tablespoon dill, chopped
1 tablespoon chives, chopped
You can find this in this week's Hilbarn box.

'Put cauliflower, tomatoes, lettuce, dill and chives in a large bowl. Add dressing, gently toss and serve.'

Done!
It's really tasty salad.
Roasted cauliflower works really well with the dressing and fresh herbs.
The cherry tomatoes are sweet and yummy.
I like it so much!

I think it is lovely to have nice and safe ingredient and freshly made recipe every week.
This image below is last week's recipe. "Peppery Spring Salad".

This is one of the most fun and happy job in my life!

Milkbar -cafe to go when I want to have a girlish coffee time.

When I want to have a girlish coffee time, I go to ‘Milkbar’, which is one of my favorite cafes in Launceston. The shop is full of lovely things which little girls would like, or which I used to like a lot when I was a little girl, like paper dolls and their clothes. Picture books for colouring, stamps, sewing things, and pretty antiques. Since my first visit only 3 days after its opening,I have visited the cozy café many times and had many cups of capucchino.

People of Milkbar are nice and friendly, and it drives me to go back to the café many times. One day, when I sat down at a wooden table decorated with tiny flowers, and opened my sketchbook as usual, Isis -Milkbar person- came and talked to me with many coloured pens. ‘Hey, Mako. These are my favorite pens. They are beautiful. Would you like to try them for today’s sketches? ’ she said. There were 24 colours of STABILO pens that have tiny black swans printed on them. It was nice of Isis. I used the colour pens instead of my ordinary black pens to do sketching and it brought me a different style of drawing. I enjoyed it so much.

Today(5th July), I went to Milkbar to relax after work. Sketching, reading magazines and having a coffee is the best way to refresh in the CBD for me. Damien- another Milkbar person gave me a zine as well as a capucchino in a warm brown coloured mug, to my table. He said ‘Do you know this magazine? I found your name in it. Look in here.’ He opened the magazine and pointed out a line. I was surprised because I had no idea that I was in the magazine, but yes I found my name in its article. They referred to me as a ‘zine artist’ which sounds unfamiliar to me.  The article was about the Junction Art Festival and introduced artists. ‘….. a resident zine artist, Mako who will draw what she sees happening and produce a limited run zine each day’. ‘Isn’t this you?’ Damien asked me. ‘Yes, it’s me.’ I answered with a big smile. It has made me so happy. The magazine called ‘WARP’ is Tasmania’s street magazine of music and art. Damien let me take a copy of it home, so I could proudly show it to my housemates. Thanks!

At house library with balcony. /

Bodhi wearing a flower of lavender on her blonds hair and Bucko playing football with George (stuffed wombat)  are smoking at balcony. Jay laying down and having relaxing time are next to me sketching at library. The library with balcony, this is my favorite place of our house. I love to be at here.

Sketches of wedding party for sweet couple.

Sandhya dressed up in traditional dressed and shining colourful jewels, showed us beautiful smile.
This beautiful bride had invite me to Sunil and Sandhya's engagement and wedding party, and I did some sketches of the party as a present for the sweet marriage couple. Sunil and Sandhya, originaly from Fiji , lives in Australia was celebrated from hundreds of people who came from all around the world.

Gold, turquoise blue and crimson.  Color coordinate of the engagement party was impressive, becouse it's not the color I use to see at wedding ceremony in Japan. These colour are really suit on colourful traditional dresses on guests. Most of the guests wearing traditional dress which remind me warm air and sun shine.  Table cloth and glass were all gold and it showed beautiful contrast with blue flowers on the table. I remember the invitation card was also decorated b the blue flowers.

May each day of your married life bloom with the warmth of your love, care and togetherness!! Congratulations!

Hand of smoking guy

I don't smoke. Moreover, I actually do not like smell of cigarette from people around me. However, I sometimes can not help myself to stop watching how people smoke. This guy whom I've sketched is my current  house mate. How he treat his cigarette is worth to have a look. It's somehow elegant. This my friend who loves smoking and I who don't like smell of smoke are now making a book together. I'm quite excited because the book is nary done. Can you imagine the title of our book? The title is "Cigarette Meditations."

Wooden Boat Rally and Samuel Bester/

Wooden Boat Rally 2012 held at Seaport Marina Launceston, Tasmania on beautiful sunny Sunday bring me two fantastic meetings. It was a day of gift!

Because of my friend talked about "how great wooden boat festival is" several times these days, I was keen in this event and went out with my sketch book. Seaport Marina was clouded by all generations of people and a lots of different type of beautiful wooden boats. "Rally entrants included rowing skiffs, splendid steam powered launches, speed and motor boats, sailing craft large & small, beautifully built new and old dingies... (from website of Wooden boat rally)" I had no idea about boat engineering, history neither how to play with boat, however, it was really fun to have a look through all wooden boats. The boats were just so beautiful.

When I was into sketching boats and people, I was very relaxed and happy as usual. Sketching the scenery is a kind of meditation to me. The owners of the boats seemed also relaxed and happy. They were really proud of their boats and told me stories of the boat. Each boats have their own name, history and stories. "Show us your sketches!" The owners smiled to me when they saw their boat and themselves in my sketch book, and some of them gave me their signature. The above is an boat named 'S.L LADY LYN.' The owner wrote down information of this boat "Huon Pine 90 Length 66 Beam Steam  Powered"as well as his name. We were both happy and smiled together. Sketch book often helps communicate with people - especially new faces, that is why I love to go out with sketch book.
As soon as I finished a sketch and stand up to move next place, one guy came and talked to me. He said "Excuse me, I was watching while you. You draw really fast. Can I have a look your sketch book, if you don't mind?" I passed my sketch book to him and answered "Sure! Feel free to pour pages. " I'm always quite happy to see people enjoy looking my works. He went through whole sketch book quickly and asked me "Are you interested in to come next year's Wooden Boat Rally as an artist? People would love to see you draw their boats during event. Your sketches are good and you draw it really fast. By the way, I'm organising this event." What an exciting it is! My answer was "Of course, Yes! I am interested in your plan! I'm looking forward to come back here to draw boats next year!"

Another gift of day is meeting with lovely music and musician; Samuel Bester.

His guitar and his voice were really suit on this perfect sunny Sunday. I just love the music so much, although I had no idea what genre is this and what does the lyrics mean. I'm not professional about music at all, however, I know this music was really good with my feeling and atmosphere of Wooden Boat Rally. I decide to sitting close to him. Having light meal, a cup of coffee and drawing him. During he was singing, he smiled to audience. He sometimes look at me and smiled too. His eye was warm and beautiful.
The miracle was happened! When he finished singing,  he came to me with that beautiful smile! "Hey! Did you draw me? Can I have a look?"

Samuel Bester said he likes my drawings and interested in my little book which I made in December. The book is collaboration of my drawings and Mickey's poem. We promised to see evening again and swap his CD and my book, and then he went back to his performance. Such a great meeting! I have a feeling that we can be friends!
To tell the truth, I was little bit curious whether he really will contact to me although he asked my phone number. He is professional musician and sing amazingly. On the other hand, I'm not really professional artist or designer yet.

I think it's miracle!
He appeared and gave me his 2 CDs and changed to my book.
He gave me his sign on his CDs and I wrote my sign on my book.  I was so excited!

This Sunday was day of gift!
I'm lucky to have these two nice meetings, and
I decide to continue going out with my sketch book all the time!

a thousand stories to write./紡ぎあげたい幾千もの物語

As noise, memories and daytime
dissolve into drops of rain,
I sit before a blank page
with a thousand stories to write
but no-one to write to.

Mickey Rhubarb (Poem)
Mako (Illustration and Japanese translation)

This poem was written by Mickey Rhubarb for my little book "TASMAKO - Moments of Tasmania with Mako's eyes". He has already left here, Tasmania and now travelling somewhere else in India.

I'm still have a thousand stories to write in my heart. I hope I will be able to write down every stories and publish for someone who I have not met yet. At the moment, I have no idea who to write it but I'm pretty sure there must be someone can enjoy my essay with drawings and Mickey's poem. My goal in this year is publication of my works; at rest one in Japan, hopefully more in both Japan and Australia. If anyone keen into it, please let me know by writing comment on this blog or contact through facebook page "Mako/真子 ".<http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mako真子/150972124948218>.
