Hilbarn's Fresh Recipe Project./

Hilbarn's weekly recipe is our new project.
The hand writing and drawing illustration recipe is delivered with fresh vegetable every week.

Hilban is 'Sharing love of fresh Tasmanian Produce.'
Hil and Barn lives in north east Tasmania.
They  buy directly from growers and farmers and deliver it to your town directly.
"We source produce from smaller growers who are passionate about what they do, as well as from larger farmers who appreciate our efforts to maintain the freshness of what they produce - picking up produce from them, then packing and delivering fresh to you within as short a timeframe as possible. "

She doesn't know what kind of vegetable she would have. As soon as she receive vegetable and fruit, Hilary cook one dish out of the ingredients which she pack into the box to deliver. My role is to turn the yummy recipe into hand writing and drawing card. Hilbarn packed everything on Sunday and we can receive it on Monday in Launceston. So this is real food's real recipe which is created absolutely freshly every week.

This is the Hilbarn box filled with fresh vegetable, fruits and the fresh recipe!
I'm very excited to open the box,  like opening birthday present.

There are the recipe and a list of their fresh products.

It's a lot!

I actually cooked this week's recipe 'Roasted Cauliflower & Herb Salad' yesterday.

'Put cauliflower florets on oven tray lined with baking paper. Drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with sea salt and pepper. Bake for about 15 mins. until browned. Take out and turn cauli over to brown other side. Remove and set aside. '

'To make the dressing: put 2 tablespoons capers, roughly chopped, 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard, 2 cloves garlic, crushed and 2 tablespoons cider vinegar in a jam jar. Set aside for 15 mins. Add oil, shake up, then add salt and pepper. '

Other ingredients are
10 cherry tomatoes, halved
handful of torn lettuce
1 tablespoon dill, chopped
1 tablespoon chives, chopped
You can find this in this week's Hilbarn box.

'Put cauliflower, tomatoes, lettuce, dill and chives in a large bowl. Add dressing, gently toss and serve.'

Done!
It's really tasty salad.
Roasted cauliflower works really well with the dressing and fresh herbs.
The cherry tomatoes are sweet and yummy.
I like it so much!

I think it is lovely to have nice and safe ingredient and freshly made recipe every week.
This image below is last week's recipe. "Peppery Spring Salad".

This is one of the most fun and happy job in my life!

Behind the TV commercial. -Mako's first TVad project./

My sketches became an animation for a TV commercial for Junction Art Festival with a soundtrack by Noah Symons of Great Earthquake, and produced by Cheese House Productions. I believe that it captures the lively, happy atmosphere of the Festival.  I hope that many people see the lovely TV commercial and will like it.

I have been so excited to work for on the TV commercial because this is the first time I’ve done a project like this and it’s also the first time I’ve done collaborative work. Alison and Laura from Junction Arts Festival, Cheese House Productions and I had our first meeting in a beautiful room with gorgeous chandelier at the Junction Arts Festival office in Albert Hall. Everyone seemed excited and had lots of ideas for the commercial.

After the meeting, I was given a long list of images to draw. Specific and iconic buildings of Launceston were required as well as the images of art projects in the Festival. I drew the Clock Tower, gate of City Park, Albert Hall and so on. I know these buildings well as I have been living in Launceston for three and a half years, however, my memory was not clear enough to draw these buildings, so I decided to go out to the city. I walked around the city with my sketchbook, and drew its scenery and buildings. I had a coffee break and did more sketches of the city and people at a cafe. In the end, I drew and painted a lot of images for the commercial.  There is a mountain of art pieces in my room.

Since drawing all these sceneries and people of Launceston, I felt that I'm more connected to city.
I believe that the animation create a good feel about Launceston as well as Junction Art Festival.
Please check our TV commercial.  You will like it.

Mako on a cover page of WARP magazine./

You can find my work in  WARP magazine which is a street magazine of music and art. My artwork that features in the Junction Arts Festival is the cover page of WARP’s August issue.

I have tried to put the warm and friendly characteristics of the Junction Art Festival, into the artwork.  The festival has many participatory projects and most of the projects are free to the public. The audience are invited to be a part of the art works.  The scrunchy doodle style of drawings is a transformation of the phrase ‘Junction Arts Festival is dedicated to presenting contemporary art in a welcoming environment to all communities that is accessible to all ages.’  I really do like the concept of the festival.
There are many art projects, artists, and characters in this illustration. I imagine that little kids enjoy having look the coverage like a picturebook 'Where's wally?'

You can pick WARP magazine up free from the many spots like music shops and cafes in Tasmania. You also can download it on their website.

This is my first project as an officially enlisted freelance artist. I now have an Australian business Number and I did this cover page as my professional work, instead of for a hobby.
First of all, I received the offer of doing the cover page, talked to festival people, contacted magazine people, drew  and edited art work, made a tax invoice with my ABN, and got my work published. Every process of this work was a totally new experience  to me. In addition, every process happened  in English  which is my second language. Can you imagine how excited I am? I feel my overseas life has stepped up to the next stage.
I want to say thank you to Junction Art Festival and WARP magazine
Thank you for giving me such a great opportunity.

Anyway, ‘Keep your eyes peeled for the August issue of WARP!’
That’s what WARP magazine wrote on their face book page. ‘Eyes peeled’ is a new term to me and I like it. ‘Eyes peeled’ sounds painful and scary though.
「Keep your eyes peeled for the August issue of WARP!」
‘Eyes peeled’
Keep your eyes peeled..'

Check it out!

Drawings as an interior./

My drawings are now displayed as a part of the interior at 'wan' which is a Japanese restaurant on George street, Launceston, Tasmania. Responding to the colour of original interior, I chose the art works drawn in vermilion and black, and they were framed by mat texture gray paper.

GOING SOLO?

Polly McGee's speech "ARCHITECTS AS STARTUPS" inspired me.
Her energetic and powerful presentation about setting up in solo practice helped me to imagine my future clearer. I was motivated to start preparing to achive my future vision.

Polly; independent writer, editor, educationist and blogger, came to university of Tasmania for the FutureGrad Workshop on 16th September. The workshop was about alternative possible future career paths for architecture students. Big practice, small practice, or going to solo. Running own company or working as a solo. Working locally, nationally, or internationally. Polly gave us the idea of solo practice through the topics "Why would you do it?""What are the key risks to consider?" and "What are the mitigations?"

Although she showed so much risks to consider,  her story of going to solo was very attractive to me. I know I love to engaged people directly and closely.  In addition, I have specific area/field I has been interested in and I believe it have/ will have needs. Polly said that solo practice is one of the best ways to communicate to our generation, new needs and aesthetics. It also could create a niche firm and build a brand.
Business, cash flow or insurance could cause head ache on me. So, I tried to imagine my future case every time when she explain about methods of mitigations; "Work out what your strengths are, and look for partners with complimentary skills.""Partnerships are a great option for spreading the risk. Choose partners for your firm that create a supply chain, or work with others in related fields.""Understand you market: if you go niche, what are the needs of your clients, both in a design and relationship sense.""How will you communicate with them, what is your point of difference." etc.....

After all, I has been keen into going to solo from few years ago.
I would like to write down my future vision.  I think I'm going to be a solo designer and writer. The field I would work could be whole over the world. My design hopefully achieve sustainable architecture which could heal the environment and people. I also would like to tell stories about the design and people around the world by drawings and essays written in both of Japanese and English.  Do you think is it too dreamy?  I somehow think it is not impossible. Imagine how I will work 15-20 years later,.. it makes me so happy.

I also have the idea of close future. I would like to work at architecture firm in Australia or Japan. I think working in Australia is better at this stage, for knowing australian architecture, having stronger connection with English speaker people and for improve my English especially writing. Beside architectural work I'm going to write down hips of essays and draw everyday. Hopefully I will be able to start my career as independent writer and illustrator about architecture within 5 years, it means before I will have baby. This is because I want to have both of my happy private life and my career.

I want to have my family and raise my future children like how my mother did for me. My mother was always with me in my childhood memories, and she was keen into children's education. To me, she is like a mother in "La Grenadière" -Pomegranate House written by Honoré de Balzac. That is my ideal mother I want to be. I guess solo practice arrow me to be with my future children during I'm working. I might be able to write down a essay when my future little kids taking nap. well... I don't know whether it really work as I have never have my children yet.

There are so many alternate career paths, but I believe there is no right answer. Nothing right and nothing wrong. I just need to do my best to grab chance/opportunity which might drive me better paths.

I would like to introduce some other Polly's advise.

"Use social media tools and work the free marketing and viral opportunities they present."
"Become an expert through blogging and tweeting, be an upstart startup."

"Get mentors, find the people in your industry that are living the dream and ask for their help."
"Look for market opportunities and follow your gut."
"Be in the right place, at the right time, and take a well calculated risk."

What I can do first is....I guess keep uploading this  blog :)
and be ready to grab opportunity.

Working at the office in Tasmania /

1st February

I got up around 6am this morning. Taking shower, checking emails and leaving temporally house in Hobart, Tasmania. Chilly wind came from Sanday bay beach. Gray heavy cloud above me. 10 minute ride on the bus took me to CBD of Hobart.
This is my second day of working at the office of the state architect office.

This work would be very precious experience to me, although I will work for only two weeks. Working with professional in the oversea! My research could be a part of the state architect's project! How exciting it is! In addition, I'm going to know about new city, Hobart. Doing architectural research may bring me a sense of this city much deeper than just traveling. I'm excited.
On the other hand, I'm worry about working with new faces. I may not be able to fully understand what new people talk to me. Since I left Japan, I feel that every one who I have met speak different type of English. Different accent, speed and intonation made me confuse. I know I need time to get familiar with each person's English.

I think I'm little bit nervous. My heart has been beating faster than usual. I arrived in front of the office at Macqarie street nearly one hour before our work suppose to be start. Luckily, I found a coffee shop across the office building. Dark brown timber table and chair. Smell of coffee in the quiet coffee shop. Silky milk form. A cup of cappuccino always let me relax. I'm now feeling better. So I'm now writing this journal.

2nd February
Day3

I'm sitting at the same coffee shop as yesterday. Having a cup of coffee and watching busy street. Sunny warm morning.

Beautiful heritage buildings can be seen on the Macqarie street. The books I read yesterday says that "Macquarie street was built on the alignment of one of the earliest tracks of Hobart town." In 1970's, the width of the Macquarie street was key factor in their being upgraded into an architectural route to service the growing volumes of traffic. During the 19th and 20th centuries, civic function was developed at Macquarie street. Government office, facilities, buildings and public squares are on the street. When I'm enjoying coffee, many people wearing suits walked on the street very fast. I can see traffic jam on the road. I guess people are hurry to go to their office to work. Some of them came into this coffee shop and grab coffee. Very busy morning scenery.

4th February
Day 5

I now feel quite comfortable to be at the office.
A warm sociable atmosphere. Interaction between people who are working at same office.
The lady working at the office is very helpful and friendly. There are three girls from university of Tasmania same school as me. They are friendly and hard worker. Our supervisor seems really busy but we have enough chance to talk with her. The state architect is also friendly. Although he is too busy to have a time with us, he often say "Good morning!" with lovely smile and ask us "How is your project going?"The atmosphere of this office is "Welcome!"Even though work itself is stressed, I'm happy to do work at this office.
To be honest, I prefer working at this office than doing project at the university.I guess the reason is the number of the people. 70 master students and listening one/two lecturers doing project at university.
I also didn't have any project with senior or junior. There were less interaction and communication with other, during semester at university of Tasmania. Compare to the working environment at university, the environment of this small office is more lively. I'm pretty sure I'll miss this office and Hobart when I go back to Launceston.
