Mako on a cover page of WARP magazine./タスマニアの雑誌の表紙をつくりました。

You can find my work in  WARP magazine which is a street magazine of music and art. My artwork that features in the Junction Arts Festival is the cover page of WARP’s August issue.
タスマニアのストリートマガジン「WARP magazine」の表紙をつくらせてもらいました。今月末タスマニアのロンセストンでひらかれるアートの祭典Junction Arts Festival がテーマです。

I have tried to put the warm and friendly characteristics of the Junction Art Festival, into the artwork.  The festival has many participatory projects and most of the projects are free to the public. The audience are invited to be a part of the art works.  The scrunchy doodle style of drawings is a transformation of the phrase ‘Junction Arts Festival is dedicated to presenting contemporary art in a welcoming environment to all communities that is accessible to all ages.’  I really do like the concept of the festival.
There are many art projects, artists, and characters in this illustration. I imagine that little kids enjoy having look the coverage like a picturebook 'Where's wally?'
このお祭り「Junction Art Festival」のフレンドリーで、あったかい雰囲気をイメージしてつくりました。参加型のしかも無料の企画が多くて、町じゅうのみんなが、アートプロジェクトの一部になる、そんなお祭り。「」っていう祭りのコンセプト文をビジュアルイメージに変換したら…と考えて。とりすましてかっこつけた感じじゃなくって、もっと身近なで親しみのもてる表紙にと、らくがきみたいな、のびのび楽しいイラストにしてみました。参加アーティストやプロジェクト、キャラクターがそこらじゅうで楽しそうにしてて、おしゃべりや音楽が聞こえてきそうな。絵本の「ウォーリーを探せ」のようなにぎやかさのイラスト。ちいさな子供がこの表紙をながめて、いろんなストーリーをそこに見つけては得意げにお母さんに報告する、そんな姿を想像しながらつくりました。
わたしも、得意げ（笑）ハウスメイト一人に一冊づつ配ってまわりました。

さて、この「WARP magazine」はタスマニアのいろんなとこ、CDやさんやカフェに置いてあります。無料なので気軽に手にとって家に持ちかえってもらえたら嬉しい。それからそれから、タスマニアに住んでいない人のために耳寄りなお知らせ。WARPのウェブサイトから、電子書籍ならぬ電子雑誌をダウンロードすることができます。

This is my first project as an officially enlisted freelance artist. I now have an Australian business Number and I did this cover page as my professional work, instead of for a hobby.
First of all, I received the offer of doing the cover page, talked to festival people, contacted magazine people, drew  and edited art work, made a tax invoice with my ABN, and got my work published. Every process of this work was a totally new experience  to me. In addition, every process happened  in English  which is my second language. Can you imagine how excited I am? I feel my overseas life has stepped up to the next stage.

この雑誌の表紙が、プロのフリーランスとしての初めてのお仕事になります。オーストラリアのビジネスナンバー(ABN)を取得して、きちんとお役所に届け出もして、の仕事。趣味じゃなくって、ビジネス。オファーをもらうところから始まって、雑誌編集者の方とお話をし、フェスティバルの人たちともお話をして、絵を描いて編集して、登録された自分のABNを使ってtax invoice（税金計算書）などの書類をつくって、そうしてついに雑誌が発行されて。こうしたひとつひとつのことが、全て新しい経験で。しかももちろん、全てが英語（母国語じゃなくて第二言語）で行なわれて。ものすごく感慨深いんです。わたしが、どれだけドキドキして、感動しながら仕事してるのか…伝わるかなぁ、どうかなぁ。わたしの海外生活、ちょこっとステップアップした気分です。
こんな素敵な機会をくれたWARP magazine とJunction Art Festivalに、感謝。

Anyway, ‘Keep your eyes peeled for the August issue of WARP!’
That’s what WARP magazine wrote on their face book page. ‘Eyes peeled’ is a new term to me and I like it. ‘Eyes peeled’ sounds painful and scary though.
