“From the age of Machine to Age of Life,”

Review of Kisho Kurokawa, “From the age of Machine to Age of Life,”
After this two reading, I now understand clearer that the architectural movement was interlinked with parallel movements in other various fields. I think architects must read the contents of the time in the various fields, and need to reflect them. In this reading, I could see how Kurokawa translate the new ideas that emerged in other fields into his architectural theory and how he transformed his theory into architectural design. It is because I agree with his strong opinion that thought or theory is important for architecture, I disagree with some of his ideas written in 2006 including his theory and projects, as it seems like they do not fit with current thought.

For example, for me, it is hard to accept that he used the mega-structure, one of the design techniques developed from his theory; metabolism, into his latest national art center project (2006 completed). The building is composed of four core and super slabs these simple structures allow modification by the placing or removal of slabs. He describes that creating compact buildings and cities by building manmade land onto buildings, as the challenge to minimize the environmental impact. This is his discussion in his paper written in 2006. I feel that the idea - developing city in the vertical direction, to reduce the footprint of buildings and to separate natural environment- is more like dualism in modern period but not in 21st century. Even though this building system has ability to “grow” or “develop”, the way is limited and highly controlled by strong power of Kurokawa’s design. It might be too authoritative for postmodernists, as the thought systems have already shifted. In my understanding, people became to prefer to choosing one answer from a lot of choice rather than finding one answer.

Other example I disagree is Kurokawa’s concept of life.  It is based on the discovering of the double helix structure of DNA. According to Fukuoka, the double helix structure means it can make copy by themselves. Therefore, the concept of life in the 60s were “life is the systems of copying themselves by themselves.” Kurokawa explained that city of helix (1961) and Nakagin capsule tower (1970) have strong connection with DNA. I guess these architecture was sensational in 60’s to 70’s same as the discovery of the structure of DNA. However, I think this architectural theory is already too old-fashion to be used in 21st Century. Firstly, the field of bioscience have advanced with new discoveries. The book “between life and non-life” written by Shinichi Fukuoka framed a new concept of life. In my opinion, it is the time to move from the thought of “DNA”.  As I have personal interest in this discussion about the concept of life in bioscience, I would like to research more and hopefully connect with architectural design.

In conclusion, I think the theory and design Kurokawa had discussed in 60’s was sensational but not in the 21st century, because philosophy, knowledge systems and other academic field like bioscience has changed. For the next generation, I have to know and read newest philosophy or any other field to reflect on my design works.

Finally, there is one big question for myself. I don’t have any answer.
In my opinion, Kurokawa’s “next age” is already past, it is old fashion.
If I try to catch up or lead “next age” at current situation,
Won’t it become old fashion in the “next age”?
If I could complete a newest architectural project in this situation,
The social situation might change soon in the future,
but the building might be still there as same as current situation.
I have a feeling that the speed of social change like thought and science is much faster than speed of the field of architecture.

Here’s another question.
There are lots of old fusion’s architecture which doesn’t fit with current philosophy, social contents or knowledge systems. These buildings exist.
Are these problems or not?
Does the field of architecture really need to fit social change? Why?
If so, how can architecture fit with the faster changes which occur in the other fields?

This is question for myself. This is to criticize not only Kurokawa but to my own writings above.

“Postmodern Research, Postmodern Practice: Studying the Barriers to Cyberliteracy Among Mentally Disabled Women”

Review of Ann Travers, “Postmodern Research, Postmodern Practice: Studying the Barriers to Cyberliteracy Among Mentally Disabled Women”

This essay argues the postmodern challenge in social practice through the researches of Travers, Newman and Holzman, and Smith. Three of them aim to change society positively and criticized modernity, western science and academics which produce only knowledge. However, they have differing discussions within research and activism. Newman and Holzman are totally against epistemology and suggest learning the way child does and to do activity or performance to change society. In their opinion, social activism is not research. In Smith’s opinion, research process works as activism like education or healing. The author stand by Smith as her goal of research is social justice and democracy. She hopes to contribute to the mentally disabled women at the center by her research.
It is a very interesting and exciting idea that research process has a possibility to change society. In this paper, only social research is discussed, but I guess design process and building process could work as activism as research. The field of architecture could be more efficient and useful to not only to propose architecture as a result but also to use architectural process as tool to improve urban poor (our DS8 project). I think I could learn from Smith’s research project for indigenous people. For example, she believes social researchers have to consider the impact of research on community and challenge to involve community. I think architectural project also should address the issues of social justice. I would like to read her essays more and to find a way for architecture as performance for social change.

“Architectural research: Incorporating Myth and Science”

Review of Julia Robinson, W, “Architectural research: Incorporating Myth and Science”
Robinson discussed myth and science in terms of methodology especially in the field of architectural design with architectural movement from modernism to postmodernism. The essay points out that there are some misunderstandings of categorizing and it produced some problems. According to Robinson, in modern period, architecture tried to develop scientific buildings by scientific process and ignored myth. On the other hand, in postmodern period, the challenge was to create mythopoetic architecture because postmodernists thought the field of architecture lost myth in modern movement. However, the understanding of scientific and mythopoetic approaches was limited. Consequently, what modern architecture achieved was not really scientific but just image of science, in other words the myth of science. Postmodern architecture also achieve only image of myth not really mythpoethic. In Robinson’s opinion, architecture is related with culture so it is necessary to consider mythical side of architecture. Author thinks it is not necessary to align science to learn myth, but it may make research stronger. Anthropology is expected to connect science and myth in the architectural practice.
I do not understand how anthropology works to combine science and myth, however, I agree that combining two methods are valid. I support her discussion that the explanation of design by using both of science and myth methods, could be very powerful. I think that the integration of science and myth in research or design process is expected to produce real scientific and mythic architecture, no more just images.

“Architectural Research Methods”

Review of Linda Groat and David Wang, “Architectural Research Methods”

This reading illustrated various systems of inquiry with advantages and disadvantages. To understand the systems, some methodologists have clarified the systems of inquiry and created several model frameworks.Robinson categories research systems into two groups, science and myth, in other words quantitative and qualitative. Jorff and Morse, and Morgan and Smith create the continuum framework model. The author warned that the two groups’ framework might lead to misunderstanding, as it is too rough. According to author, the continuum framework is still based on the two groups’ framework. The author then proposed three groups framework, postpositivism, naturalism and emancipatory.
In my opinion, it is important to understand the systems of inquiry to manage my own research, as I agree that the system which researchers use effect research. To advance the quality of my research, it may be very helpful to know what kind of research I am doing and what is the weakness of that system of research, then I might be able to avoid disambiguation. To achieve this goal, a clear framework is required to understand the position of my inquiry system.  I think a two groups’ framework to include continuum is clear and easy to understand rather than the three groups’ frame work which author recommends. The two of three groups; naturalism and emancipatory have similarities and have some overlaps, therefore it is hard to distinguish. Although I agree that two groups is too simple and some research systems do not fit, the clearness of the framework is manageable.  I would like to judge my research system by simple two groups’ framework inclusive of a continuum framework that uses several different continuums. For example from the view of quantitative and qualitative, Ontology and Epistemology, and any other work.

Under Sea Garden+off-shore wind energy generation firm/Phuket

My idea ended up in this shape.

The building is covered by two "Shells".
It is placed on the sea.

Let's move on to detail.

First of all, please look at the summary of site data below.

This building is located in tropical climate; hot and humid.

The solar rays are extremely strong.
We need to block the direct rays of the sun.

The important role of the southern shell is blocking the direct rays.

Blocking the direct rays could avoid sharp rise in temperature.
Then, the energy use for cooling would be reduced.
It is very simple.

Could you imagine very hot and sultry day?

What do you do to make yourself comfortable on muggy day?
Let me think....
In that case,  I would fan myself.
When we can feel a lovely cool breeze, we might be able to be happier.
Don't you think so?

Breeze, wind

Wind Wing Wall

「Passive System」

Humid & Hot Air

Under Sea Garden+off-shore wind energy generation firm/Phuket

This is my design proposal.

Design Exegesis

This proposition is to develop an energy generation firm and tourist attraction at Phuket, which will have many flow on benefits, from an economic point of view, it may be necessary to advance tourism industry, as it plays a major role in the countries economy.

“Under sea garden” in this building is expected to attract more and more people, as Phuket has a great water view and lot of diving spots. The building is designed to provide many beautiful areas, which allows the occupants to relax.

Since 1980’ the tourist industry has grown dramatically, and at the same time tourists have disturbed local people’s traditional life. For social sustainability, it is necessity to consider and respect local life.

This plan suggests separating “Tourism area” from “local residential area”.
This building invites people off shore. Transporting tourists to the beauty point on an ocean liner, bypassing the sea gypsy village and preserving their way of life

For human comfort, the building has to solve some climate problems.
Tropical Climate is sometimes too hot and humid for someone coming from other areas. Cooling and dehumidification is required and at the same time, the environment needs to be considered and there must be an energy reduction in consumption.

As the amount of people increase so does the demand for energy. There is a need to sustainably supply energy. This plan proposes an “off-shore wind energy generation firm” due to it is clean energy and the strong wind in Phuket. Solar radiation can also be used to generate energy.

This building is influenced by three main flows with different characteristics; air flow, water flow and occupant movement.

(to be continue...)

Architecture is responsible for environmental issues that the Earth now faces.

Due to the current environmental issues that the Earth now faces, the field of Architecture must adopt new technologies that allow less energy consumption.

Over recent years, the environmental problem of climate change is a major global concern, and one that should be carefully reflected upon. It can be asserted that many human activities have contributed to climate change, particularly last 100 years (ed. Jones 2000). This is largely due to the changes social needs and way of life that have allowed the development of bigger cities with larger structures such as skyscrapers. Through the use much energy, architecture has contributed immensely to the environmental problems the Earth now faces (Mendler & Odell 2000). The excessive energy consumption is the cause of CO2 production, which is widely accepted as a fundamental cause of climate change. However, the new technologies and designs are studying and developing in the field of architecture to solve these problems.

This essay will demonstrate how architectural technologies have the ability to reduce the negative impact of architecture on the environment. First, it will illustrate the relationship between architecture and environmental problems. The essay will show how a lot of energy is consumed in architecture. Following, this essay will be exploring the technologies available in architecture and how they positively interact with environment. In exploring these technologies, it is possible to understand how new architecture practices can address the need for environmental sustainability. Finally, the essay will describe the importance of adapting new technology and sharing technology due to the increase in population in developing countries. Architecture is responsible for a considerable amount of carbon emissions, thus new technologies and design practices that allow less energy consumption must be adopt.

The energy consumption of modern architectural structures has had a vast impact on climate change. Both the construction process and the operation of buildings significantly contribute to the harmful emissions produced by society. An example is the amount of energy used in the field of architecture in the United States of America. Approximately 50% of the energy consumed by the American nation was either through the construction of buildings or their operation (Williams 2007). As America is one of the primary emitters of CO2, the contribution that is made by the architectural industry in this country is considered large on a global scale. Furthermore, other developed countries that also emit vast quantities of CO2, such as Germany and Japan, also contribute to the environmental problem in the architecture field. Approximately 30% of Germanys CO2 emissions (Richarz, Schuls & Zeitler 2007) and 36% of Japans are a result of the architecture industry (ed. Jones 2000). One of the main sources of energy consumption is in the operation of buildings (ed. Jones 2000). The main running costs are in the use of air conditioning and lighting. In Japan, the running of air conditioning systems account for approximately 47% of the buildings energy consumption; cooling, heating and ventilation (ed. Jones 2000).

The field of architecture has developed a variety of technologies that can be used to save energy for the building and operation of structures, and it help to reduce CO2 emissions. Two different approaches are available, the active approach and passive approach. The active concept emphasizes the design of mechanical systems (ed. Jones 2000). For example, computerized lighting control, solar system, and evaporative cooling are theoretical efficient (Gevorkian 2009). On the other hand, the passive approach is using design techniques to use natural energy more efficiently (ed. Jones 2000). It is helping to influence the scope for daylight utilisation or natural ventilation (Richarz, Schuls & Zeitler 2007). It is important to integrate passive design with active approach to achieve the most efficient way (ed. Jones 2000). Using passive and active technologies can reduce energy consumption for heating, cooling, ventilation and lightning.

Architecture has made a number of technological advances in some areas such as design and materials to produce efficient lightning. The controlled distribution of daylight is a key factor toward better energy performance (Kwok, KG & Grondzik 2007). The direct sunlight brings over much heat and light, but new design practice and material derive the light from natural sunlight and is used instead of interior illumination (Kwok, KG & Grondzik 2007). For instance, the CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre in India is good example of the passive approach. This building uses a circular courtyard design, which enhances air and light circulation for the business centre (Nigam-Misra 2008). This basic circular design allows sunlight to reach every corner of the building, helping save up to 90 per cent of the use of artificial lighting during the day (Nigam-Misra 2008). Another example is using new material from Kengo Kuma, a Japanese architect. He selected not concrete but plastic called Fiber- reinforced plastic (FRP) to play the main role in the building constructed 2002 in Tokyo (ed.Ishido & Komaki 2006). The translucency of FRP allows to draw light from natural sunlight and to disperse it as pleasant lighting into room.

Current air conditioning or heating system also requires large amounts of electricity as well as lighting, but it is possible to reduce significantly by new technologies (Gevorkian 2009). Through the passive approach, the new buildings design is aimed to cut heat losses in winter and over heating in summer (Richarz, Schuls & Zeitler 2007). For instance, exterior shading devices are very important in summer time to cut an excess amount of solar energy, thus it avoids too much heating and reduce the use of air conditioning (ed. Jones 2000). Another architectural practice, passive heating strategy, is an idea to move solar energy collected in daytime to night time by designing the building space using appropriate materials that have low thermal conductivity and high thermal energy storage capacity (ed. Jones 2000). Gevorkian (2009) stated that `the ideal building should be designed not require an air conditioning unit.’ However, it may be difficult to keep appropriate temperature in large buildings without any air conditioning or heating machines, in that situation there is another approach; to put new mechanical systems such as ‘solar water heating panel’ (Gevorkian 2009). It is one of simplest principals composed by maginifying glasses and fluid-filled pipes (Gevorkian 2009). The maginifying glasses concentrate solar lays and then it provide heat energy (Gevorkian 2009). This method is being used to provide an advance of energy due to recent technological development (Gevorkian 2009).

Although there are a number of available technologies and practices, they are not being adopted especially in developing countries. However, It is necessary to adopt available low carbon technologies both by developed as well as developing countries (Flamous & Bedd 2010). The total population on the Earth has been increasing dramatically. As a result more and more buildings, roads and public works take the earth’s surface (ed. Pollingtor 2003). Framous (2010) mentioned that greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries will overtake developed countries within next few years. Consequently, it is important to adopt new technologies especially in the developing cities (ed. Pollington 2003). It can be asserted that one reason behind new technologies are not being adopting in developing countries is the governments and societies pay much more attention for development rather than environmental sustainable. According to Flamous (2010), the earth has been destroying by not lack of technology, but due to lack of application. The efficient technologies need to be transfer to developing countries (Flamous 2010). It is also important to understand the current situations and factors affecting and changing the environment; the natural environment has been damaged by manmade environment (ed. Pollington 2003). Because of the field of architecture has a major responsibility for urban development (ed. Pollington 2003) , it is important to exchange information such as study of current environmental issues and new design practice between architects in the international field.

In conclusion, due to the big impact that architecture has on the environment there is a need to move toward more sustainable architecture. Some of the problems that exist in the environment due to architecture include climate change. Currently there are a number of technologies that are being researched and developed to help combat the environmental impacts. The technological advances in material, mechanical systems and design practice lead low energy consumption in field of architecture. Despite these recent developments many of these technologies have not been adopted especially in developing countries. As the global population continues to increase as well as the negative impact on the environment it is important to share and use efficient technologies globally. Architecture is responsible for environmental problems, thus the field of Architecture must adopt new technologies and design practices that allow less energy consumption.
